Jane Jackson

Bright Seed Textiles are husband and wife team Jane and Keith Jackson, who are based near the coast in beautiful rural North Northumberland. Jane creates the artwork and Keith looks after the business side of things. Keith also makes gorgeous lemon drizzle cake for Jane’s Rag Rugging Workshops.
Jane first started working with Harris Tweed in 2005 when she moved back to her native Northumberland and learnt how to make rag rugs. Since then she has developed a real passion for this unique heritage fabric and has now built up a beautiful palette of vintage and contemporary Harris Tweeds to work with.
Jane also uses a range of commercially produced and handmade artisan wool and silk yarns in her work. Each of Jane’s tweed paintings is gradually built up by hand, starting with a layered collage of Harris Tweed. Finer details are then gradually added in yarns and unravelled individual Harris Tweed threads. The process of needle felting entails repeated stabbing/piercing the layers of tweed and yarn with hand held barbed needles. The barbs on the needles snag and entangle small fibres with each pass through the layers and this eventually fuses all the components into a single felted piece. Jane frames her work but does not put it behind glass, as glass deadens the colours and textures. Therefore Jane finishes off each piece with an embellishing machine (similar to a sewing machine, but with felting needles) to ensure that everything is completely felted into place. Each piece typically takes between 30 and 40 hours to make, depending on size.
